Designed by homegrown design studio Produce, Xtra’s Herman Miller shop-in-shop, Fabricwood, has been awarded the Gold prize at the inaugural Singapore Interior Design Award (Sida) under the Completed Works – Retail Category.
Enveloping the double-volume space within Xtra’s retail showroom at Marina Square, Fabricwood subtly demarcates the Herman Miller‘s shop-in-shop experience while serving as an iconic greeting installation.
The mammoth structure is composed of thin plywood sheets that were painstakingly shaped and bent through the application of a tailoring technique known as darting. Typically used to shape fabric to fit the human body, the ergonomic technique enabled Produce to impart soft and fluid characteristics to plywood, which is commonly perceived as hard and inflexible.
“The resulting structure encapsulates the Herman Miller design ethos, recalling the brand’s classic range embodied by the Eames moulded plywood furniture and the innovative spirit of the brand’s ergonomic work chair range, with its innovative uses of materials and advanced geometries to mould the chairs for an optimum fit for a human body,” said Pan Yi Cheng, the co-founder of Produce.
