PHOREVER: Celebrating 100 Years of the Master of Light

In the world of high-end design, few things are as elusive as "perfect" light. We often find ourselves caught between the clinical chill of modern LEDs and the impractical dimness of vintage filaments. Yet, 100 years ago, a Danish architect named Poul Henningsen cracked the code, transforming the way we inhabit our homes after sunset.

To celebrate the centenary of his revolutionary Three-Shade System, Louis Poulsen has unveiled the PH Centenary Collection. It is more than a product launch; it is a meticulous archival revival of the pieces that defined the golden age of Scandinavian lighting.

The Genesis of a Revolution: Poul Henningsen’s Vision

Before 1926, electric light was a harsh, unbridled force. Bare bulbs cast deep, jagged shadows and caused a glare that Henningsen found physically offensive. A cultural critic as much as a designer, he sought to tame this new technology, famously stating, "Once you have experienced good lighting, life is filled with new values."

His solution was the System PH. By applying the logarithmic spiral—a mathematical curve found in nature, from seashells to sunflowers—he designed a series of shades that layered light. The result? A glow that is entirely glare-free, directed exactly where it’s needed, and soft enough to make a room feel like a sanctuary.

The Centenary Collection: A Study in Aged Brass and Glass

The 2026 Centenary Collection pays homage to these original 1920s and 30s iterations, utilising materials that evoke the tactile soul of the era. Each piece in the collection is defined by Lacquered Aged Brass—a finish that carries a soft, brushed patina and fine hairlines, mimicking the cherished look of a heritage antique while remaining protected for the modern home.

The PH 1/1 Chandelier: The "Bombardement" Returns

The undisputed crown jewel of the collection is the PH 1/1 Chandelier. Originally known as the "Bombardement" Chandelier in 1933, this piece was Henningsen’s answer to the heavy, silk-shaded kerosene fixtures of the time.

For the Centenary edition, Louis Poulsen has introduced the dusty terracotta-coloured opal glass shades. These four-layered, mouth-blown glass shades are glossy on the outside and sandblasted matte on the inside. When lit, they emit a warm, tranquil glow that feels architectural yet deeply intimate. Available in 3, 6, or 9-arm configurations, each chandelier is hand-engraved with a unique production number, marking it as a true collector’s heirloom.

The Table and Floor Lamps: A Play of Amber and Opal

The collection is rounded out by the PH 3/2 Table Lamp and the PH 3½-2½ Floor Lamp. These editions feature a captivating "two-tone" glass story:

  • The Top Shade: Crafted in mouth-blown amber glass, creating a warm, ambient upward light.
  • The Lower Shades: Made of white opal glass to ensure the downward-directed light remains clean and functional for reading or working.

This combination captures "the golden hour" within the confines of four walls, bridging the gap between historical character and contemporary relevance.

The PH Centenary Collection is available for a limited time. Explore the heritage of Poul Henningsen and bring a century of light into your own space.
