Founded in 1946 by Enrico Cappellini in the small town of Carugo, Italy, the company began as a furniture workshop specializing in traditional furniture and casegoods.
In 1977, Enrico’s son Giulio joined the company and led Cappellini on its path to becoming an internationally renowned furniture brand, known for cutting-edge creativity and expertise.
Thinking Man’s Chair by Jasper Morrison (1988)
Initially prototyped under the name ‘Drinking Man’s Chair’, the tubular metal Thinking Man’s Chair was later given its name befitting the sophistication and contemplative qualities of the piece.

With a discerning eye for art and design, Giulio Cappellini established significant collaborations with designers such as Shiro Kuramata, Jasper Morrison, Alessandro Mendini, Marcel Wanders and more.
These partnerships yielded iconic furniture pieces still relevant and intriguing today.
Revolving Cabinet (1970) and Sofa With Arms (1982) by Shiro Kuramata
Japanese designer Shiro Kuramata first encountered Italian design through the Memphis movement in the 1980s. His longstanding collaboration with Cappellini saw the creation of many well-received designs, modern and almost sculptural.

Wooden Chair by Marc Newson (1992)
First designed by Australian Marc Newson in 1988 for a wooden exhibition, the solid beech Wooden Chair was further developed with Cappellini to manipulate wood to its limits.

Not withstanding its rich history, Cappellini continues breaking new ground alongside modern advancements and changing concerns.
In 2020, in collaboration with Patricia Urquiola, Cappellini released the award-winning Lud’o Lounge Chair.
The seat shell is made of 100% recycled plastic and upholstered in Oceanic, a yarn woven using upcycled marine plastic. The remarkable final product won the Good Design Award 2020 for its successful execution of sustainability and comfort in furniture design.
